“The 2021 Corliss Syrah from the Columbia Valley is a deeply structured and intensely expressive wine, showcasing the varietal’s bold character with remarkable refinement. Aged for 22 months in French oak puncheons, with 23% new barrels, it pours an opaque ruby-purple with a delicate crimson edge. The nose opens with a savory, umami-driven intensity—notes of smoked brisket, charred rosemary, and Kalamata olive tapenade are layered with cracked black pepper and hints of warm spices. As the wine evolves in the glass, dense blackberries and macerated plums emerge, interwoven with anise, toasted cedar, and a whisper of fresh eucalyptus. The palate is commanding yet finely tuned, offering a full-bodied structure with firm, gripping tannins and a lively streak of acidity that keeps the richness in check. A long, spice-laden finish unfolds with traces of dark cocoa, dried herbs, and a touch of flinty minerality. Highly recommended.”
